(01)What this is

SPC stands for stone plastic composite. The board is built around a rigid core of limestone powder and PVC, with a printed decor layer and a clear wear layer over it. That core is mineral, so it does not absorb water at all. This is the difference between SPC and laminate, which has a fibreboard core that swells the first time it floods and never recovers.

The reason it matters here is renovation. An SPC plank floats. It clicks into its neighbours to form a single sheet that rests on the substrate rather than being glued to it, so it goes down over existing tile, over concrete, over almost anything reasonably flat. No breaking up the old floor, and the room is back in use the same day.

The trade-off is worth stating. It is a printed surface, so it does not have the depth of sawn timber, and a deep gouge cannot be sanded out the way it can on a solid board. In return it is waterproof, quiet and warm underfoot, and installation is quick.

(02)On the floor

The rack, andwhat to do at it.

Boards hang full length on the rack, with sample stands alongside, so a plank can be pulled out, laid flat and walked on. Seeing a floor at full length and under normal light gives a much better idea than a short sample.

(03)Trims & mouldings

The four profilesthat finish it.

A floating floor is only finished where it stops, and it stops at every wall, doorway and step. Four profiles cover all of it, and each is made to match a decor rather than to be painted in afterwards.

Skirting

Where the floor meets the wall

A floating floor has to be able to move, so it stops short of every wall by 8 to 10 mm. Skirting covers that gap. Matched to the plank rather than painted, it reads as part of the floor instead of part of the wall.

Stair nose

The front edge of a step

The one profile doing structural rather than cosmetic work. It wraps the leading edge of a tread, holds the plank down at a heavily used point, and gives the step a defined edge underfoot. This profile should not be substituted.

Reducer

Down to a lower floor

Used where SPC meets a thinner surface: existing tile, screed, a vinyl sheet. It ramps the height difference off over a short distance so there is no lip to catch a toe or a chair leg.

T-moulding

Between two floors of equal height

Sits in a doorway where SPC meets SPC, or SPC meets something the same thickness. It also gives the floor somewhere to expand into, which is why long runs and open plans want one at the threshold even when the two sides match.

We also carry step tiles for the same job in porcelain, where a staircase is being tiled rather than planked. Ask at the counter and bring the tread dimensions.

(04)Before you decide

Things worth knowing.

Waterproof is not the same as watertight

The plank itself will not swell. But a floating floor has joints, and standing water can find its way through them to whatever is underneath. Wipe up spills; do not use SPC as the waterproofing layer in a wet room.

Wear layer, not total thickness

Durability is set by the wear layer rather than the overall board thickness. The 0.55 mm we carry is 22 mil, rated for light commercial use. Total thickness affects how a floor feels and sounds underfoot rather than how long it lasts.

Order the trims with the floor

Skirting, stair nose, reducer and T-moulding are made to match a specific decor, and they are the first thing to run out. Working out how many metres you need at the same time as the planks costs nothing; discovering it after the floor is down means either waiting or accepting a near-match.

Substrate flatness and expansion

A floating floor telegraphs whatever is under it and needs roughly 3 mm flatness over 2 m. It also moves with temperature, so leave the expansion gap at every wall and under every door frame, and let the trims hide it.

Direct sun and conservatories

A rigid core is stable, but a wall of glass onto a west-facing terrace is a hard test for any floating floor. In a sunroom, tell us. The fixing method changes, and some ranges should simply not be used there.

Come and walk on it.

Bring a photograph of the existing floor and tell us whether it is tile, screed or timber. In most cases SPC goes straight over it; where it cannot, it is better to know that before the planks are ordered. Bring the run of doorways and steps too, and we will work out the trims at the same time.
